INJURY UPDATE 15/05/08
The season may be over and many of you may already be missing your weekly fix of football, but for Dons head physio Simon Crampton there's still plenty of work to be done. mkdons.com will be in close contact with the medical department all summer to keep you bang up to date with all the latest developments . . .
Whilst the majority of the boys are now enjoying some time off, unfortunately for those who are injured they still have to report into the treatment room.
Although they're not coming in every day it's important they keep up with their rehab programmes to make sure they're ready for the upcoming season.
However for the lads who are not injured, they'd have been delighted to find a rather large package containing their off season training programme waiting for them when they got home from their little adventure last week!
On Wednesday, I took a trip down to Harley Street in London with Colin Cameron and Danny Swailes.
As we spoke about last week, Cams was there to see a specialist who examined his medial collateral (knee) ligament and then dry-needled it. This basically causes the ligament to bleed, with the aim of encouraging the healing process, thus resulting in a stronger ligament. The process was completed without any problems and he'll now have a couple of days' rest before we start an intensive rehabilitation programme to get him back to match fitness.
Danny Swailes had been having some minor problems with both of his Achilles tendons. Medically, this is referred to as Achilles tendinopathy, basically a condition caused by overuse.
Although, as you'll be aware, this hasn't stopped him from playing, it's caused him some discomfort over the last three months. The off-season period has given us the opportunity to rectify this and make sure he's ready for next season.
Swaz underwent a similar procedure to Cams but, following the dry-needling, they injected some of Swaz's own blood into the Achilles - quite a new method of treatment. By injecting the blood, we're transferring growth factors (a substance carried in your blood) into the area, which will increase the healing response to the injury. As you can imagine, this was quite a painful process but Swaz gritted his teeth and got on with it!
Swaz will also have a couple of days' rest now, followed by an intensive rehabilitation programme to prepare him for pre-season training.
As you'll be aware, we still have a couple of other players working on injuries during the summer period, and I'll be keeping you up to date with those throughout the break.
